Remote Learning Recommendations During COVID-19 School Closures
Following the Governor’s announcement that schools will not re-open before May 4, 2020, The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education issued additional guidance regarding district and school remote learning plans.
With the extension of this closure, we believe students, families, educators, and staff in all communities will benefit from the clarity of statewide recommendations as educators and others continue to support their students during this crisis.
Soon, I will provide you with a summary of the short set of guiding principles that were derived from the state and revised to fit the needs of the Agawam community in regards to remote learning over the next several weeks.
Remote learning cannot replace students’ experiences in school communities with their teachers, administrators, and support staff. We must all pull together – parents and caregivers, students, the community, and of course, our educators and staff – to help students continue their learning over this extended period.
As a school district, Agawam Public Schools will take the direction from the state and work to put forth more specific guidelines according to our contexts, capacities, and needs.
We will continue to issue guidance to support districts and schools in their implementation of remote learning, including specific recommendations related to students with disabilities, English learners, and high school students.
We are all working hard in this effort and appreciate your continued feedback, support and understanding.

Preschool Developmental Screenings
The Agawam Public Schools is offering developmental screenings to all 3 and 4 year old children who reside in town. A developmental screening is a brief assessment that looks at children by quickly sampling their skills across the areas of language, reasoning, gross motor, and fine motor. It is designed to identify children who might be at risk for a possible learning problem or delay. If you are interested please call the Agawam Early Childhood Center to schedule an appointment for a screening. If you have questions please contact Robin Fernandes, Director of Early Childhood @ 413-821-0597.
The Agawam Early Childhood Center is an integrated preschool program for 3 to 5 year-old children. We meet the needs of children with and without disabilities and follow a developmentally appropriate curriculum where all children learn through play and hands on activities. Children may be put on our enrollment list when they reach the age of 2 years, 9 months.
Our programs run from Monday to Thursday with AM and PM sessions that operate for 2 hours and 40 minutes each session. We have classrooms at 108 Perry Lane and 2 classrooms at Granger Elementary School. Please see the application for specific times for each location.
The tuition cost for the program is $170.00 per month for the four-day program. Children with disabilities who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) are not charged tuition.
We provide high quality educational experiences for children based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and research on how young children learn. We support and promote family education that builds on and enhances family strengths and facilitates active family involvement in their child's learning.
